Epic Heroes: Skirmish Gaming in the Realms of Fantasy Update!

For those of you wondering about the size and scope of the Epic Heroes Fantasy supplement, let me update you.

I am finished with the principal writing. Now I need to do some chapter intros, list out some errata that we have from the main book, and also finish Magic Items, War Beasts, Flight, and Alchemical gear.

That being said, we're already at a word count of....wait for it.....49,009. The main rule book is a smidge over 55,000 words!

Pile that wall high boys, 'cause unless I miss my guess, we're in for a wild night!

Interview for Anatoli's Game Room - Brink of Battle: 1 year on

For those of you who know me or follow our Brink of Battle activity online, you know that my very first reviewer of the game when it released last year was Alex Kawczynski, of Anatoli's Game Room blog site.  Alex has, in my opinion, the best review site, if not best overall, on the web.

So its been a year and a half since the game went to market, and Alex sent me over a list of some great questions about my design philosophy, view of the industry, and lessons learned through the writing and publishing process.

You can read the full interview here http://anatolisgameroom.blogspot.com/2013/09/interview-with-robert-faust-brink-of.html

Thanks to Alex for his continued support, friendship, and great interviewing skills!

Brink of Battle Demo Day at GAME KASTLE!!!

This past Saturday Drew and I had the pleasure of demonstrating our Brink of Battle and Epic Heroes rules at Game Kastle in Santa Clara California.  Jason and his crew were great to work with and are a credit to the store owner Ray.  We will definitely be back!

We set up our 'Faustburg' town circa 1632 AD in the midst of the Thirty Years' War that ravaged what is modern Germany today.  Those Damn Dirty Swedes ( :) ) are attacking Faustburg, while Hauptmann Rosenkreutz and his men are defending the town from the raiders.  And Scrote the Butcher is seeking revenge on the Swedish Cavalrymen for the virtue of his daughter.

Our first games were using the Brink of Battle rules for the Period 2 - Early Modern.  Drew had several willing participants join him in the fray.  Here are some pics:

Old Scrote put up a pretty good fight for one game.  He was collecting musket balls without worry, then died horribly in close combat!

And here's the Face of our Franchise, Drew Davies!

After the Historical games, we changed things up by breaking out the new Epic Heroes Fantasy rules!  Now the humans picked up an Ogre by the name of Hagsmar the Ripe so they would stand a chance against the K'thoneans and their Cephalon Masters!

The Cephalons are the secret rulers of the K'Thoneans.  Cephalons come from the Great Beyond and have fell powers such as the ability to Dominate an enemy model and make it fight its friends.  Such a thing happened during one of the games and Feldwebel Stoltz was forced to slay a nearby Pikeman with a few jabs from his halberd.

All told we had a great day and thank the Game Kastle crew for their hospitality!

Brink of Battle nominated for an Origins Award!!!

So I stumbled across this press release tonight and to my surprise and delight, Brink of Battle has been nominated for an Origins Award in the Best Historical Miniatures Rules category!

I submitted my copies last November and hadn't heard a word until I accidentally noticed that the press release came out on Heroclix Realms. :)

Needless to say, I'm really moved by this.  Six years of writing, play testing, tweaking, and assembling seemed like an eternity.

I am honored just to be nominated.  The other games in the category are really well produced.  My thanks come to Alan, Gilbert, Drew, Scotty, and everyone who helped play test, edit, or improve the game in its development.

Here's the link to the nominees http://gama.org/OriginsAwards/tabid/2720/Default.aspx

Fantasy Writing Contest Announced!

I am pleased to officially announce the Strategic Elite Epic Heroes Writing Contest!

As work continues on Epic Heroes: Skirmish Gaming in the Realms of Fantasy for our Brink of Battle skirmish game, we thought we'd give people the opportunity to get their writing published in a rule set!

Starting today and going through the end of May, you can submit a piece of fiction in the categories listed and have a chance at getting published in the final Epic Heroes game supplement due out in June 2013.

Whether you have been published before or not, now is a great opportunity to be part of the most robust fantasy skirmish game system in years.

Just go to our website at http://www.brinkofbattle.com and click on the Writing Contest tab at the top left of the page.  It will tell you all you need to know about the rules and parameters of the contest!

Epic Heros will allow players to create their own worlds and settings, or use one of two 'plug & play' game settings.  It will also give you the ability to add Magic & Monsters to various Historical periods to create Weird West, Weird War 2, and Gothic Horror games.  This full color publication will be the first supplement released for the Brink of Battle system.

We look forward to reading your entries, so get started today!

Brink of Battle Fantasy Demo's at ConQuest SAC!

Well, in the words of Johnny Cash, I've been everywhere man!  We are ramping up preparations for ConQuest SAC in Sacramento California April 5th-7th.  We will be running two demo tables that will be different from the ones we did last year. You can learn more about ConQuest here http://www.conquestsac.com/

Our Historical board will be a wilderness encounter between outlaws and their lawmen pursuers in the California foothills circa 1889.  Yes, a Cowboy demo that doesn't invovle the desert!  The table will be set like one of my favorite scenes from Tombstone, where Wyatt Earp wades out into the river and shoots the living hell out of the Cowboys.

Our Main Event board will be the Ruins of Vanis-Trymno.  This is the first public viewing of the Fantasy rules and game board for Epic Heroes: Skirmish Gaming in the Realms of Fantasy.  Participants will get to play on a section of the ancient city that plays a major role in the Epic Heroes official setting.

We will be running demos all day in the Vendor area Satuday and Sunday and welcome you to come play a game!

On Sunday morning we will run our Band of Heroes game.  BoH is a new way to play Brink of Battle where you create a single model as your hero, and you join up with other heroes to fight the forces run by the Game Master.  Our ConQuest event is called The Great Brain Robbery!

It's 1889 and people are having their brains removed by mysterious forces holed up in the foothills outside of Harperville, California.  The town posse must pursue their fell attackers into their hillside lair, and put a stop to this brain heisting once and for all!  Since diabolic forces are at work, Father Seamus O'Malley brings with him The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, California! Evil Doers beware!

That's what we have in the hopper so far.  Hope you participated in the poll I posted to the right of this entry.

Meet the True-Bolds!

Tonight we kicked off four weeks of Epic Heroes playtesting.  This is the adventuring party I put together using out of production Ral Partha and Foundry figures.  They are called the True-Bolds and I will detail them later.

New Year, New Figures!

Well, 2012 was a great year for us. And as the last things I painted for the year, I introduce some miniatures that I recently repurchased from the old Ral Partha, Foundry, and Grenadier ranges.

I'm going to use these for a Fighting Company called the True-Bolds for our Epic Heroes Fantasy supplemtent playtesting.  Brink of Battle gets Monsters and Magic and brave warriors to chop them up!

Here you go...
